This guide offers an introduction to help you get started using F-PROT Antivirus. For administrators, please read the setup guide (included in the LAN Update package) for further information on how to setup the software in a network.

Downloading and installing F-PROT Antivirus for Windows Corporate.

Notes:

• Before you begin with the installation, please see the system requirements of F-PROT Antivirus.
• F-PROT Antivirus may detect the previous version installed on your computer and offer you to uninstall the program. In that case, you may remove the version 3 of F-PROT Antivirus but DO NOT restart your computer when the uninstallation has completed otherwise the installation of version 6 of F-PROT Antivirus cannot continue (see step 3). If you need step-by-step instructions, see Upgrading from version 3 to version 6 of F-PROT Antivirus for Windows
• F-PROT Antivirus will automatically be installed at the boot partition (disk volume that contains the Windows operating system files e.g. C:\) then followed by the folders "Program files\FRISK Software\F-PROT Antivirus for Windows". If you would like to install the program in different location, see What are the Windows Installer command-line options?

1. Go to our download center. In the download page, do the following:
   
   For registered users, login to the Customer Zone. In the Customer Zone, download the appropriate package. Save the file on your Desktop.

   For Internet Update of F-PROT Antivirus for Windows Corporate only. When the download starts, your Subscription Key is displayed. Please take note of your Subscription Key because you may need to enter it in the program during the installation.

   If you are having problems logging in to the Customer Zone, please see I cannot login to the Customer Zone.

   For trial users, please download the trial version of F-PROT Antivirus for Windows.

2. To start installing F-PROT Antivirus, go to your Desktop and double-click the file fpav-windows-x86-xx-xx-x.x.x.x.msi to open Setup.
3. In the "Security Warning" dialog box, click Run and the installation begins.
4. Click Next to continue the installation.
5. Accept the license agreement and click Next to proceed.
6. Select the shortcuts you want to install. These shortcuts are selected by default. You may deselect the particular shortcut you do not want to be installed. Click Next and the features you selected will be installed immediately.
• Desktop shortcut - Select this option if you want to add F-PROT Antivirus icon on your desktop.
• Start menu shortcuts - Select this option if you want to add F-PROT Antivirus icon in start menu.
7. For the Internet Update package of F-PROT Antivirus for Windows Corporate only. Enter your Subscription key or get trial subscription. Please note that you can also enter your subscription key or get a trial subscription key after installation.

For registered users, enter your Subscription Key.

For trial users, select Get trial subscription key and enter your name and e-mail address. Once your application is granted, your Subscription Key is automatically added in the program.

For the LAN Update package of F-PROT Antivirus for Windows Corporate only. Enter the local network update location from where settings and virus signature file will be updated from. Please note that you can also enter the local network update location after installation.

8. Click Next to proceed.
9. Click Finish to exit the installation.
10. Your computer needs to restart. Click either Yes or No.

Obtaining a Subscription Key and entering it into the program

For Internet Update package of F-PROT Antivirus for Windows Corporate only.

F-PROT Antivirus requires a Subscription Key to be able to download updates. When you buy or renew your subcription, a new subscription key will be assigned for you. Therefore, you need to obtain your new subscription key and enter it in the program. Your Subscription key can be obtain either within the program or in the Customer Zone.

Please note that when your subscription key is about to expire, F-PROT Antivirus will start checking for new subscription. If you have bought or renewed your subscription, your new subscription key will be automatically added in the program.

The most convenient way to obtain your subscription key is by using the "Get new key" function in the program. Do the following:

1. Run F-PROT Antivirus.
2. Click the Updates menu and select Renew subscription.
3. From this window, click on the Get new key button and your Subscription Key is automatically added in the program.

If this does not work, please obtain your subscription key in the Customer Zone and enter it manually in the program. You need to a customer number (included in the receipt of purchase) to logged in to the Customer Zone. Do the following:

1. Go to http://www.f-prot.com/download.
2. In the download page, log into the Customer Zone by entering your Customer Number.

   If you are having problems logging in to the Customer Zone, please see I cannot login to the Customer Zone.

   In the Customer Zone, click the arrow under "key" then a new windows opens (see below).



3. Click the arrow under "key" again (see below) and your Subscription Key is displayed.



4. To be able to transfer this key into the program, use the "Copy & Paste" method. To copy the Subscription Key, take your mouse and place your cursor at the beginning of the Subsciption Key then click and hold the left mouse button, while pulling your mouse over the Subsciption Key. This should highlight the Subscription Key. Release the left mouse button. Now, with the cursor over the highlighted text, right click the mouse for options, and select 'copy'. Now, you have copied your subscription key.
5. To paste the subscription key in the program, run F-PROT Antivirus.
6. Click the Updates menu.
7. Under Subscription, select Status.
8. From this window, click the New Subscription Key button.
9. Click the Paste key button to transfer the Subscription Key or enter your Subscription Key in the box manually (see below).



10. Click OK.

Getting a trial subscription

For Internet Update package of F-PROT Antivirus for Windows Corporate only.

1. Run F-PROT Antivirus.
2. Click the Updates menu.
3. Under Subscription, select Get trial subscription. Please note that this option disappears after you successfully obtain the Subscription Key.
4. In the Get trial subscription window, fill out all information required and click Send. Your Subscription Key is automatically added in the program.

Entering the update location

For LAN Update package of F-PROT Antivirus for Windows Corporate only

Local network update location is where all settings and latest virus signature files are stored.

1. Run F-PROT Antivirus.
2. Click the Updates menu and select Settings.
3. From this window, enter the correct local network update location.

Updating the virus signature files and settings

For Internet Update package of F-PROT Antivirus for Windows Corporate only

By default, the Internet Update package of F-PROT Antivirus for Windows Corporate updates the virus signature file via the Internet automatically without user interaction. For further information, see How to set up automatic updates

For LAN Update package of F-PROT Antivirus for Windows Corporate only

The LAN Update package will be installed on all client workstations and then there has to be at least one computer (server) on the network with F-PROT Antivirus for Windows, Internet Update package, installed (see below).

On the client workstations, specify the shared update location. This can be done either during or after the installation. If this is done after the installation, do one of the following:

• From the application. Run the program. Click Updates and then click Settings.
• From the registry. Edit the registry key “HKLM\SOFTWARE\FRISK Software\F-PROT Antivirus for Windows\LAN Updates”.

Note:Make sure that the F-PROT Antivirus service on the client machine (running in system account) has access to the shared update location (see "Setting Security and Access").

To update the virus signature file for the LAN Update package

An administrator must copy the latest virus signature file (antivir.def) from the Internet Update package to the shared update location from where the clients computers can update their local copies.

To update the settings files for the LAN Update package

If program settings for all client computers must be suitable for the network environment, the administrator may set his/her local copy of F-PROT Antivirus with the desired settings and then copy the settings files to the shared update location. The settings files are the following:

• config.xml (program settings)
• tasks.xml (advanced scans)
• exclusions.xml

Both the settings files and “antivir.def” are located at \FRISK Software\F-PROT Antivirus for Windows\ (e.g. C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\FRISK Software\F-PROT Antivirus for Windows\). A batch file can be used to automate the copying of the virus signature file and settings files to the update location and then schedule the batch file to run regularly, e.g. hourly ( see "How to create a script to automate the copying of files"

Upgrading the software

For Internet Update package of F-PROT Antivirus for Windows Corporate only

By default, the Internet Update package of F-PROT Antivirus for Windows Corporate updates the software automatically via the Internet without user interaction. If some files are locked, it may require to restart your computer to apply the latest updates.

For LAN Update package of F-PROT Antivirus for Windows Corporate

Program upgrades (MSI/MSP) for the LAN Update package for F-PROT Antivirus for Windows Corporate must be downloaded from the Customer Zone and distributed manually on the network.

Checking for updates

You may check for available updates to ensure that F-PROT Antivirus is running with the latest versions. If updates are available, F-PROT Antivirus will download and install the latest updates immediately.

To check for updates:

1. Run F-PROT Antivirus.
2. Click the Updates menu.
3. Under Updates, select Current versions.
4. In the Current versions window, click Check for updates.
5. Click Close.

Running a full scan on your computer

We highly recommended that you scan your computer thoroughly for virus infections the first time you run F-PROT Antivirus. Please note that F-PROT Antivirus automatically disinfects or quarantines all infected files upon detection. To run a full scan, do the following:

1. Run F-PROT Antivirus.
2. Click the Virus scanners menu.
3. Select Manual scan and select My Computer.

When you have not fully scanned your computer for some time, F-PROT Antivirus will display a message in the System Status notifying you that some important tasks must be performed immediately.
