FRISK Software International

Summary
Product: F-PROT Antivirus for Windows
Version: 6

I have a virus. What should I do?

If your computer is infected with a virus, please do the following:

  1. Upgrade to the latest version of F-PROT Antivirus.
  2. Update the virus signature files. Do the following:
    • Run F-PROT Antivirus.
    • From the main menu, click the Updater button.
    • Click the Update button and when finished, click Close.

  3. Shut down all Network Drives to constrain the virus. In a home network where you are the administrator, you can easily unplug your network cable or Internet connection to constrain the virus.
  4. Disable the System Restore feature (only for Windows XP and ME users). Do the following:
  5. Windows XP

    • Log on as the Administrator or with the details of the user that has administrator rights.
    • Close all open programs.
    • Right-click My Computer on Windows desktop.
    • Select Properties.
    • Click System Restore.
    • Check Turn off System Restore checkbox.
    • Click Apply and then Yes to delete all existing restore points.
    • Click OK and restart the computer.

    Windows ME

    • Log on as the Administrator or with the details of the user that has administrator rights.
    • Close all open programs.
    • Right-click My Computer on the Windows desktop, and then click Properties.
    • Click the Performance tab.
    • Click File System.
    • Click Troubleshooting tab.
    • Check Disable System Restore, click OK.
    • Click Yes to restart.

  6. Delete files in Temporary Internet Files folder and Content.ie5 folder by using the Disk Cleanup. Do the following.
    • Open the Disk Cleanup by clicking Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup. Disk Cleanup will then calculate how much space you will be able to free on your hard drive.
    • Select Downloaded Program Files and Temporary Internet Files and click OK.
    • Click Yes to confirm performing these actions.

  7. Restart your computer in Safe Mode with Command Prompt. Do the following:
    • Press Start > Shutdown > Restart
    • When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows Advanced Options menu.
    • At this menu, select the option for Safe Mode with Command Prompt using the arrow keys and then press Enter key on your keyboard.

  8. Then, scan your computer with the Command-Line Scanner. At the command prompt type:
  9. c: [ENTER]
    cd\[ENTER]
    cd program files[ENTER]
    cd frisk software[ENTER]
    cd F-PROT antivirus for windows[ENTER]
    fpscan /all /disinfect /output=<filename.txt>[ENTER]

The path should look like this (see below).

    C:\...\Frisk Software\F-PROT Antivirus for Windows\>fpscan /all
    /disinfect /output=<filename.txt>

The command, fpscan /all /disinfect /output=<filename.txt>, enables F-PROT Antivirus Command-Line Scanner to scan all hard drives/shares and boot sectors and then automatically disinfect all infected files found. Then, it also creates a scan report (filename.txt) which is by default located in "C:\Program Files\FRISK Software\F-PROT Antivirus for Windows".

Please refer to the command-line scanning options of the F-PROT Antivirus Command-Line Scanner.

  10. When scan is completed, please restart the computer.
