Updating the virus signature files in version 3 of F-PROT Antivirus

F-PROT Antivirus enables to download updates from the Internet, local network or through the proxy server. Please select what you like to do:

Updating the virus signature files automatically

To update the virus signature automatically, you may use the F-PROT Scheduler to create a scheduled task to run updates at your convenient time.

Notes: Confirm that the system date and time on your computer are accurate, because scheduled tasks relies on this information to run scheduled tasks. To verify or change this information, double-click the time indicator on the taskbar.

To add a scheduled task in the F-PROT Scheduler:
  1. Run F-PROT Antivirus.
  2. Click the Scheduler button.
  3. From this window, select the Schedule button.
  4. In the Updater window, set the "Starting date" you would like to run the task (usually the date when you create the timetask).
  5. In the Time properties window, specify the starting date and time and the frequency of the task to be performed. Please note that most users set the Updater to download updates on the hour (e.g. 9:00 or 16:00). You can optimize your download speed by setting the Updater starting time to any number of minutes past the hour (e.g. 9:07 or 15:43). In this way you avoid the heaviest download traffic. Also, if the computer is constantly connected to the Internet, we recommend setting "Every 6 hours" for the frequency. However, if you are using a dial-up modem, we recommend that you update the virus signature files at least once a day.
  6. Click Save to save your settings.

For further information, please see the helpfile. To access the helpfile, click Help from the program itself.

You can also use the Windows Scheduler to run updates automatically.

To add a scheduled task in the Windows Scheduler:

Before you begin, make sure the F-PROT Antivirus folder is shared to all users with full control permission because you may need to create a scheduled task for all users.

  1. Click Start > Control Panel > Scheduled Tasks > Add a Scheduled Task.
  2. Follow the instructions in the Scheduled Task Wizard. When you have finished creating the task, double-click the newly created scheduled task in the Scheduled task list and then type the following command in the "Run" edit box:
  3. "C:\Program Files\FSI\F-PROT\FP-Updater\Updater.exe" /INTERNET /QUIT /HIDDEN

The command, /INTERNET /QUIT /HIDDEN allows to run the Updater from the Internet and silently downloads and installs latest updates. The updating process requires no user interaction. If you are using LAN, use the /LAN=<path> command. For further information, see What are the command-line options of the Updater?

Updating virus signature files manually

  1. Disable the RealTime Protector prior to deleting the files. This is done by right-clicking on its icon (F-StopW) in the system tray (bottom right hand corner) and selecting to exit. Make sure that you enable it again afterwards, to do so, run the program and press the RealTime Protector button. Now access the "C:\Program Files\FSI\F-Prot" (default location) folder and delete the following files:
  2. Sign.def
    Sign2.def
    Macro.def

NB: F-PROT Antivirus engine itself will not run after deleting the definition files (Sign.def, Sign2.def, Macro.def). You will probably receive an error like Error:SIGN.DEF not found.

  3. Run the Updater. To do this:
    1. Click Start and then All Programs.
    2. Locate F-PROT Antivirus for Windows and then select Updater.
    3. Click the Update button. Then, the virus signature files will be downloaded and installed immediately.

If the procedure above does not work, do the following:

  1. Download the latest virus signature files from our current versions page.
  2. The virus signature files are stored in two .ZIP files:

fp-def.zip -- contains the virus signature files for Application/Script viruses and Trojans, called sign.def and sign2.def
macrdef2.zip -- contains the virus signature file for Document/Office/Macro viruses, called macro.def.
  3. Save these signature files to your local disk and decompress them. Use a file decompression utility to extract these .ZIP files and copy the contents to "C:\Program Files\FSI\F-PROT" to replace the old ones. Please note that Windows XP has a built-in file decompression utility.
  4. Remember that you need to do this twice, i.e., for fp-def.zip as well as for macrdef2.zip.

If you do not have a file compression utility you could try one of the links below to products that are available on the web:

Other file compression utilities are available from CNET Download.com.
