There are a number of things you can do to avoid being targeted by spammers:
- Have an alternative e mail address that you only use when signing up for
lists on websites, e.g. Joke of the Day, filling out surveys and such.
- Do not agree to receive commercial information when you are downloading products off the Internet.
- Never reply to spam! Lawful companies will allow you to unsubscribe from their
mailing lists but if you reply to spam the spammers see that your e-mail address is active and
you read their junk mail. This only encourages them to send you further junk mail,
and even sell your e-mail address to other spammers.
- Avoid companies that state they will sell personal information to a third party.
If a site does not have a privacy statement or refuses to guarantee your privacy,
don’t give out personal information or sign up for anything using your private e-mail address.
