Security Bulletins for July 2006

12 July 2006

Microsoft Security Bulletin Summary for July reports the release of five patches rated "critical" and two rated "important". An end-user version of this update summary is also available.

All five of these critical updates patch against vulnerabilities that could potentially allow for remote code execution on affected computers. In addition to the Windows operating system, affected applications include Office, Project, Visio, Works and Visual Studio.

As reported in an announcement from Microsoft all support has been ended for Windows 98 and Windows Millennium Edition (Windows Me) while support for Windows XP Service Pack 1 is due to end on 10 October 2006. Existing online support documents are still available but telephone and e-mail support are not provided and no more security updates will be released.

Users are advised to patch their systems against these vulnerabilities immediately. Patches can be downloaded via links posted within the appropriate Security Bulletins and by visiting Microsoft Update.

Important:
We recommend that users patch their systems by downloading and installing critical Microsoft updates as soon as possible.

Users are also encouraged to update their antivirus software daily and to install a firewall on their computers, if they have not done so already. For more information on firewalls, please read Microsoft's tutorial on how to protect your PC.
